Allan's story
1932 February - 2016 April

Allan, as he was widely
known, was born on the 10th February
1932 in the City of Liverpool.
Leaving school at the age of 14 he began his working life in the insurance
offices around Victoria Dock.
Like many others he commenced his two years National Service with the Royal Air
Force something which took him to the south of England,
where he was to remain. Although Liverpool was always
the place he called home and the team he supported with a passion far and wide.
Allan was able to continue
his love of playing football and proudly recounted how he had been paid to play
for a non-league side in an early round of the FA Cup, sadly this was as close
as he could claim to turning 'pro' but it would do. It was whilst stationed at
Notholt that Allan met his first wife Angela,
they were later to have a son Glenn. He was able
to transfer the skills he had obtained in the RAF to a place which would be the
centre of all his remaining working life, a place at the time known to many
simply as London Airport and a role with BEA (British European Airways). BEA
was later to merge with BOAC to become British Airways. Plane travel was still
in its early days and not, as it is today, within the reach of many everyday
travellers. He often recalled that in the early days it was not uncommon to be
working from tents before they were replaced with the buildings we see today.
This was the beginning of a long association with Heathrow that saw him perform
a number of roles with airlines such as PanAm and TWA.
That experience enabled him to achieve the position of Station Manager for a
newly emerging and fast growing airline Saudia, the national airline of Saudi
Arabia. Overseeing all the challenges that
brought including the first all-cargo routes between Saudi
Arabia and Europe and
the emerging wish for those making the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca by air. It was during this period that he met and married his current wife Hazel.
Allan continued playing his
football enjoying many a trip playing abroad and making some life long friends,
many of whom themselves have passed away during the last 12 months.
1978 saw a new venture together with a former colleague from
his PanAm days, Brian
Beale, when
they became the co-owners of Skyliner Services who primarily were an
aircraft cleaning company. It was sad to hear that Brian
himself passed away the day before Allan.
A couple of years later having sold the business he took up
a role with THF (Trust House Forte) as Airline Sales Director achieving in 1997
the accolade of "Best Worldwide Sales Person". He was astute enough
not disclose exactly what he did allowing sales figures speak on his behalf,
enabling him to remain in post throughout a number of takeovers and mergers
well beyond retirement age. It was unheard of to reach retirement age in such
positions let alone surpass it. This lead to a delay in being paid as nobody
knew how to process a salary without pension contributions. This resulted to
the following telephone conversation........"There aren't many people who
can manage without a monthly income, and my wife is one of them"
In 1989 Allan became a
Grandfather to Katie enjoying her company very
much.
Allan finally decided to slow
thing down and together with some friends and colleagues formed a consultancy
Hotels for Airlines.
It was shortly after this that Allan
presented symptoms that were later to be diagnosed as Parkinsons Disease which
would go on to affect his speech and movement. For the last couple of years he
had increasingly become house bound and developed Lewy Body Dementia, an
ailment often associated with Parkinsons.
He died very peacefully at the RoyalSurrey Hospital,
where he had been recieving palliative care, with Hazel
and Glenn at his side.
